Until recently the Australian gaming population has been suffering under an iron fist of censorship in the gaming industry. Games like Grand Theft Auto and God of War were either censored or banned outright for any content that exceeded their 15 rating, meaning most gamers either pirated the american versions or simply went without.
But now there is hope for gamers in Australia! According to Destructoid, the new R18+ rating should allow the equivalent of M-rated content, but that’s assuming Australia’s individual states approve the new law as well. If all goes well the gaming world will be welcoming Australia to the gaming fold sometime next year. In a time when an M rating can reflect something more profound than just the shock value of games like Mortal Kombat and Gears of War, this could be more important than it might seem at first blush.
