A question has plagued mankind since the dawn of animal domestication: can we extend the hand of friendship to the pig community? After all, we have them to thank for bacon, our nation’s greatest treasure.

Well today is a brave new day, and just like our first steps on the moon, we have now taken steps to emotionally connect with pigs for no immediately apparent reason. According to Jamin Warren of Kill Screen, The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research’ ‘Ethics, Research and Managementʼ is using a new iOS software program that trains pigs to follow a colored dot that the user manipulates in order to find “ways in which the development of new technology can be used to increase the depth of societal debates on animal farming.” Yeah, I’m not sure that really clears things up for me either. But hey, science!
